Studio Visit: LOLA Landscape Architects
18 May 2018 17:00 - 19:30
Studio Visits, instigated by Het Nieuwe Instituut, is a series of evenings dedicated to contemporary architectural practice, its challenges and its possibilities. The series invites professionals, students and the broader public to cross the threshold and take a peek into the architect's workplace. This evening, LOLA Landscape Architects will open their doors.
LOLA Landscape Architects
LOLA Landscape Architects was established in 2006 by Eric-Jan Pleijster, Cees van der Veeken and Peter Veenstra. Out of a fascination with forgotten and derelict landscapes, LOLA (a contraction of LOst LAndscapes) conducts relevant and innovative research into subjects such as the urban periphery, dikes and the future of agriculture, resulting in numerous publications. The practice was awarded the Young Maaskant Prize in 2013.
LOLA has worked on a large number of projects in the Netherlands and abroad. The practice's steady growth, despite the crisis, seems to run parallel with the increasingly prominent role that landscape architecture plays in urban development. For LOLA, the park is the new icon of the city. In recent projects such as Bajes Kwartier and Adidas HQ, LOLA employs landscape in order to bring cities and buildings to life. In this Studio Visit, LOLA will reflect on the past twelve years, and look forward to what's ahead.
Studio Visits
Hosted and curated by an architectural studio in collaboration with Het Nieuwe Instituut, each evening will be organized around a tour, a presentation, an open conversation and a celebration. The gathering will serve as a catalyst for debate and architectural discourse, for strategizing urban policies and actions, for collaboration, forms of solidarity, and friendship as well as competition, and for - why not? - architectural gossip. Studio Visits is also a space in which to reformulate the social position of the architect in a fundamentally changed field of influence, by collectively exploring possible roles and responsibilities.
This first series of visits will be hosted by studios with diverse spatial configurations, forms of practice and portfolios, including Powerhouse Company, Casanova+Hernandez, and LOLA Landscape Architects.
